Courses

Department offers both DM Gastroenterology (intake of five per year) and DM Hepatology (intake of one per year). Both the courses are recognized by Medical Council of India and affiliated to The Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University.

Entry: Candidates are shortlisted on the basis of nationwide entrance examination (MCQs) held in the month of April/May each year. Shortlisted candidates are called for clinical and oral evaluation. The final selection is as per institutional rules. As per MCI rules, MD (Medicine) is an entry qualification for DM-Gastroenterology and MD (Medicine)/ MD (Pediatrics) is an entry qualification for DM-Hepatology.


Course duration: Both DM Gastroenterology and DM Hepatology courses are of 3 year duration.


Curriculum: The curriculum and assessments are as per guidelines of The TN Dr. MGR Medical University and Medical Council of India. The training for both DM Gastroenterology and Hepatology concentrates on three core areas namely – 1. Clinical judgment and patient management; 2. Endoscopy skills and 3. Research methodology.


Research: Besides the mandatory thesis, we encourage all our post-graduates to present their research work in national forums and eventually publish in national/ international journals. At our weekly academic sessions, postgraduates learn to critically review the research articles to keep themselves abreast with ever-expanding knowledge. Our department boasts of a well-equipped library and online subscriptions of all major national and international journals.

The advanced endoscopy fellowship program started in 2008.. The intake for this course is one per year.

Curriculum: The course includes training in advanced endoscopy procedures viz, ERCP, EUS, balloon enterscope, GI physiology etc. The candidate is also trained in management of patients pre and post procedure. The candidate is expected to present journals / seminar every week.

This course is targeted at post graduate physicians working at secondary care/ mission hospitals with special interest in Gastroenterology. It provides a good opportunity for hands-on experience in managing GI disorders by working at a high volume centre.

At the end of the course, the fellow will be able to diagnose and manage common GI disorders at both inpatient and outpatient settings as well as handle GI emergencies efficiently. As part of the programme, training in performing diagnostic upper GI endoscopy will be provided.


The Department of Gastroenterology works closely with allied departments such as Hepatology, Upper GI Surgery, Colorectal Surgery, HPB Surgery, Critical Care, GI Pathology, Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology. Hence the fellow will be able to work as part of a team and participate in MDT meetings.

There will be quarterly internal appraisals and an exit exam on completion of the course. The fellow is strongly encouraged to participate in departmental research activities with potential for paper presentation and publication.

This course is targeted at post-graduate physicians with a special interest in Hepatology.

At the end of the course, you will be able to confidently diagnose and manage common causes of acute and chronic liver disease and its complications, including liver failure. You will be trained in UGI Endoscopy related to the liver. You will be exposed to managing liver transplant patients with an emphasis on recipient selection, pre-transplant recipient work up and post–transplant management. The department of Hepatology works closely with allied departments such as Gastroenterology, HPB Surgery, Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology, Critical Care, Hepato-Virology and Hepato-Pathology. You will learn to work as part of a team and actively participate in the MDT meets’. It is hoped that you imbibe the humanistic and ethical aspects of the practice of Medicine. There exists good research infrastructure for study of liver diseases and focus is on liver disease neglected in India like vascular liver disease, Wilson’s disease and liver diseases unique to pregnancy; the latter, if unrecognized, results in high maternal mortality. The interested candidate is strongly encouraged to participate in ongoing departmental research activity with potential for paper presentation and publication.
